Thoughts on New Moon

"Jacob Black can give you gifts?" Yes, Edward, and he can also steal this movie.

WARNING: F-bombs in the "cons" section and smut talk in the "pros" section ;)

First, some thoughts on critical reaction:

I now completely understand critics' reaction to this movie. I'm not saying I agree with them, but I do understand them. This movie was geared toward fans of the franchise - as it should have been. It wasn't trying to be inclusive to casual filmgoers. I could tell throughout most of the film that anyone watching this who was not a fan of the franchise probably wouldn't "get" or like it. You're either a fan, or you're not. I'm OK with that.

I'm always in favor of "bad news first" and leaving on a good note, so I'm going to list the cons first.

CONS

The flash-forward scene with Alice's vision of vampire Bella. Holy choir of mountain goats, I don't even know where to begin. I was sniggering. EVERYONE in the theater was sniggering. TERRIBLE.

The hiiiiiiiiiiiillllllssssssss are aliiiiiiiiiiiive...

The sparkling was better than the first movie in that it looked less like sweating, but it was way too distracting. But vampires shouldn't sparkle anyway, so I'm blaming Stephanie Meyer for this one.

The soundtrack didn't mesh well with a lot of the scenes. I found the lyrics often distracted me from what was going on.

What the hell was up with the bit at the end of the Volturi scene where Marcus stands up with outstretched arms and utters the most overacted weirdness I've ever heard? It sounded like Vincent Price doing a bad Frankenstein.

I'm not sure how I would have ended the movie because I hated the ending of the book (the very last bit where they walk off into the sunset while Charlie is screaming and all is fucking forgiven). But the movie's already-rushed ending stopped so abruptly with the proposal that it felt contrived to me.

Robert Pattinson's makeup was horrific. He was NOT hot. He looked like a mime for the whole movie except for a few select moments in Volterra.

Maybe he's born with it. Maybe it's Maybelline.

Speaking of Volterra, I actually CRINGED at Rob's misshapen nipples. His spray-on abs were HILARIOUS. I felt vindicated. He looked like a starving Ethiopian. If I were Team Edward, I would have been pissed all around, except that...

...There was WAY TOO MUCH EDWARD AND NOT ENOUGH WOLVES IN THIS MOVIE. Phantom Edward was in damn near every scene while that sparkly fuck was "gone." This movie was supposed to be Team Jacob's ONE chance to bask in the wolfie goodness in lieu of that goddamned reanimated corpse everyone wants to fuck so much.

Ahhh...I feel better. Now that that's over with, on to the good times...

PROS

Taylor Lautner nailed it. End of story. Whatever critic said his performance was "amateurish" can kiss my lilly-white ass. Taylor OWNED Jacob. His line "Age ain't nothing but a number, baby" actually made me swoon.

Some abage for your cabbage.

I loved the downward-spiraling camera during Bella's meltdown in the woods. Nice touch.

Harry Clearwater: "My Kung Fu is strong" OWNED me. Also working his heart attack into the Victoria storyline was a nice touch.

The muffin scene was WIN. Chaske Spencer and Tinsel Korey were perfect as Sam and Emily. The little pecking kisses he gave her...I melted. And when Alex Meraz looked up and gave Bella a smirk and a "sorry (i tried to eat you)" I cracked smooth the fuck up. Perfect Paul.

Oh, yeah, and all the guys are half-naked. That helped.

The wolves' cliff-diving scene...Oh. My. Jacob. Chaske's jump = panties MELTED. Fun fact: The part where you see them throw Jared over the cliff is SO MUCH FUNNIER if you know how afraid of heights Bronson Pelletier is.

Billy Burke was every bit the scene-stealing shiznit I expected him to be.

Copstache - he doesn't hover, and he doesn't disappoint.

Eric Yorkie crying during Romeo & Juliet was awesome, but not as awesome as EVERYTHING. MIKE. NEWTON. SAID. HiLARious.

The two lines Jackson Rathbone had in this movie made me laugh HARD for all the right reasons.

I'm gonna let the poodle hair go, just this once.

Kristen Stewart greatly improved her performance as Bella over Twilight. She managed to keep the blink-and-stutter to a minimum. She even got the lip biting under control. Very nice, however...

...She got schooled by Anna Kendrick in their sequence. The whole theater was ROTFL over Jessica's every line. Perfection.

Ashley Greene was even more amazing as Alice than she was in Twilight. The scene with her and Jake in the same room wins 10,000 Internets. And, yes, the line about "putting the dog out" made me LOL HARD.

The Victoria chase scene was great and served as a great segue into Bella's cliff dive. I loved that whole sequence.

During the vote scene, Bella abruptly turns around and tells Edward to "shut up." I cackled. LOUDLY.

The "awkward elevator ride" in Volterra, complete with elevator music, was awesome. I was giggling. xD

Aro was just as I imagined him: Cheerfully foreboding.

Eeeeeeexcellent.

At the end, when Edward speeds around the corner in the Volvo and Jacob is standing right there in the middle of the road with his arms crossed ... My heart fell out of my chest. It was PERFECT and AWESOME.

All in all everyone was great as far as being their characters. The makeup and wardrobe choices were largely unfortunate, but the characters were there for me - and that's what counts in my opinion.
